How To Brew With A Chemex

The Chemex is a classic pour-over brewer and longtime favorite that's perfect for brewing with at home. Invented in the 1940s, It’s on permanent display at MOMA in New York and has showed up in so many movies as a prop.

The Chemex Coffeemaker must be the most linked and referenced coffee brewer in caffeine history. Here's How To Brew it at home: 

Ingredients

Makes 2-3 cups

20g Whole Coffee Beans

About 300g 92°C Hot Water

Equipment

Grinder

Gooseneck Kettle

Carafe or Cup

Weighing Scale

Instructions

Step 1: Rinse

Place the filter paper in the Chemex brewer. Rinse the filter paper using hot water. Discard the water and place it on the weighing scale.

Step 2: Grind

Grind 20g of coffee using the medium-coarse setting of your grinder.

Step 3: Setup

Pour coffee grounds into the wet filter paper. Ensure that the coffee bed is even and then hit tare on the weighing scale.

Step 4: Pre-infuse

Hit the timer and pour 40g of water in a circular motion over your coffee bed. Your hot water should cover all the dry spots.

Step 5: Pour

When the timer reads 30 seconds, continue to pour the water in circular motion gently until the weighing scale reads 300g. Remove the filter and coffee grounds.

Step 6: Serve & Enjoy!

Give the Chemex a quick swirl, pour out and enjoy.
