The Kiamutuira washing station is a part of the Mutira Cooperative Society, a collective that has been at the heart of Kenyan coffee production since 1951. Over the years, it has grown into a symbol of quality and community, producing some of the finest coffees in the region.
The cooperative comprises of 600 farmers, predominantly from the Kikuyu ethnic group known for their rich cultural heritage and agricultural prowess. More than half of the members in the cooperative are women, highlighting the pivotal role of women in the community.
The farm benefits from a temperate climate with daytime temperatures averaging 15°C and nighttime temperatures around 25°C. This climate, coupled with an average annual rainfall of 150mm, provides the perfect conditions for growing high-quality coffee.
Macadamia shade trees protect the coffee trees from excessive sunlight and also maintain the soil health. This not only helps to improve the coffee quality by reducing the temperatures, but also promotes a sustainable, nutrient-rich environment.
While coffee is the primary crop, the agricultural diversity is enhanced by the cultivation of tea. This provides income stability and also ensures the land remains fertile and productive.
