The Coffea Diversa is one of our favourite coffee garden in Biolley, Costa Rica, with one of the largest private collection of coffee varietals. By choosing the path of genetic diversification, Gonzalo Hernandez has preserved the history of coffees that were once grown around the world but have long been forgotten.
Discovered in Brazil in the early 1900s, the Purpurascens Longberry is a natural mutation of the Bourbon varietal. It is characterised by its purple foliage, hence the name. The plant is tall, with pinkish flowers and long, slender beans that are pointed on one side. This varietal is extremely resistant to drought because of its strong root system.
The yield of each plant is low and thus, the size of this nano-lot is only about 30kg. Therefore, it is uncommon to find this varietal grown around the world. We first learnt of this varietal from Gonzalo in 2016 and were enamoured by the unique cup profile. We are delighted to be able to showcase this coffee once again, and it is tasting just as good as we remember.
The cup profile is floral, reminding us of bergamot, with a slightly effervescent apple acidity, and red tea finish. This is definitely one of our favourite varietals from Coffea Diversa.
