The Coffea Diversa is one of our favourite coffee garden in Biolley, Costa Rica, with one of the largest private collection of coffee varietals. By choosing the path of genetic diversification, Gonzalo Hernandez has preserved the history of coffees that were once grown around the world but have long been forgotten.

This varietal, Guadeloupe Typica, is the oldest and purest Typica there is. Its origin traces back to the 1700s, when King Louis XIV of France received some coffee plants, which were mainly cultivated in a controlled environment. Sir Gabriel de Clieu, a French naval officer and later, governor of Guadaloupe Island in the Carribean, discovered the coffee plant on one of his visits to France. He managed to get hold of some seedlings and transported them back to the Carribean on a long and arduous journey.

This is where the very first coffee plants in the Americas originated. It turned out that the climate was more than suitable for growing coffee, and the crop quickly spread from there. The plant has a tall stature, with widely spaced branches and longish bean shape. The leaves are elongated, with the ones near the tip of the branch taking on a reddish color.

The cup profile is perfectly balanced, with a stonefruit acidity, like apricot, transiting into a pleasant nuttiness, and finishing with a round tea character, reminiscent of oolong. This is the second in our series of Coffea Diversa coffees from Gonzalo this year, and we are excited to share with you this rarely-tasted varietal, or as Gonzalo prefers to say, botanical variant.
